History
Safetytech Accelerator was created in 2018 as a joint initiative of Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF) to apply frontier technology to the world’s toughest safety challenges in high‑risk industries. Rooted in Lloyd’s Register’s 250‑year legacy in making the sea, land and air safer, and powered by the Foundation’s philanthropic investment, the Accelerator was designed from day one as their dedicated vehicle to turn insight on global safety risks into real‑world technology solutions.​
From the early Lloyd’s Register Safety Accelerator challenges onwards, the programme brought LR and LRF together with leading industrial partners and startups to trial cutting‑edge tools such as advanced sensing, data analytics and AI in live operations, lowering barriers to adoption and de‑risking innovation for all participants. Over the years this collaboration has delivered dozens of pilots and feasibility studies, informed major evidence reports for the Foundation, and helped open the safety and risk marketplace to hundreds of technology innovators worldwide.​
In 2021, Safetytech Accelerator became an independent, autonomous organisation to scale the founding vision of Lloyd’s Register and Lloyd’s Register Foundation, growing its programmes, labs and global partnerships while remaining tightly aligned with LR and LRF’s mission of engineering a safer world. Today, we continue to drive change across safety-critical industries by working hand-in-hand with LR and LRF, jointly advancing human safety, strengthening operational resilience, and accelerating progress toward a more sustainable future.
